Evonik provides methyl methacrylate as a halogen-free, reactive flame retardant and corrosion inhibitor

Evonik has a production site in Darmstadt, Germany, which plans to sell 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate as a preservative and flame retardant under the name VISIOMER® HEMA-P70M. Typical product applications for such methacrylate monomers include adhesives and plastics, paints and coatings, fibers, composite resins, and gel coats.

Customers mainly use VISIOMER® HEMA-P70M as an adhesion promoter, but recent research has also shown that it is an effective halogen-free reactive flame retardant or preservative. Since this material acts as a reactive diluent or a comonomer bound in the polymer backbone, it does not migrate like conventional flame retardants. VISIOMER® HEMA-P70M combines with a non-polymerizable flame retardant to further enhance flame retardancy.

Martin Trocha, head of Evonik's application monomer line, said: "VISIOMER® HEMA-P70M offers new options for customers with special requirements for flame retardancy and corrosion resistance. This monomer adds to Evonik's product portfolio. A special performance methacrylate product that once again highlights our role and provides innovative solutions to our customers."

VISIOMER® HEMA-P70M is a monomer with a variety of properties, containing 30% methyl methacrylate, which is particularly easy to process due to its low viscosity. Due to its low color index, this specialty monomer is particularly suitable for optical applications in acrylate and methacrylate systems. This makes it useful in applications where transparency and surface quality are critical, such as surface coatings, plastics or adhesives.

In addition, the monomer is also antistatic and has an emulsion stabilizing effect.
