Russia uses explosive method to manufacture diamond-like superhard materials

The Russian Institute of Chemistry and Mechanics invented the "Diamond-like Superhard Materials Explosive Preparation Method" a few years ago, and it is also possible to obtain polycrystalline synthetic diamond by this method. This makes it possible to process very hard materials and high quality optics.
The exact name of the method is "dynamic-static compression method". The basic process of its work is to strike (load) the object to be compressed with a shock wave and apply a relatively high static pressure during a few minutes of pause (unloading). This process is achieved by the explosion of the charge. A thick-walled ampoule filled with a special pre-formed mixture containing the graphite-based components to be pressed is placed in the charge. After the explosion, the diamond-like superhard material was taken out of the ampule for laser and ultrasonic machining.
The diamond-like boron nitride obtained by this method has excellent characteristics. Diamond phase part: 98-100%%; density: 3.30-3.35 g/cm3; maximum hardness: 7000-7500 HV (Vickers hardness unit); withstand pressure: 1100-1200 MPa; diameter: 10-30 mm. The explosive method of diamond-like superhard materials invented by Russian scientists is unique in the world. The maximum hardness of such materials prepared by high temperature and high pressure in South Africa, the United States, Japan, Belarus and Ukraine is about 4000-6000 HV, which is far lower than the ultra-hard materials obtained by the explosion method. In addition, the Russian method does not require complicated and expensive equipment and does not require a high level of staff. The process of production is virtually free of waste.
Russian diamond-like superhard material explosive preparation method has been applied for a patent. The pilot production has now been completed. The method for preparing polycrystalline synthetic diamond by this method is now in the development stage.
