In order to reduce weight, German institutions developed plastic motors

Reducing wind resistance, reducing weight and improving power system efficiency are the main ways for today's automobiles to improve work efficiency. To this end, people have designed hidden door handles, virtual exterior mirrors, more streamlined bodies, and aluminum or carbon fiber materials to reduce wind resistance or weight. However, recently, foreign scientific research institutions seem to study how to reduce the weight of electric vehicles in an impossible field, that is, motors.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology (ICT) and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) recently proposed in Germany to replace the metal casing of motors with plastics to reduce the weight of electric vehicles.

On a traditional internal combustion engine car, the energy conversion efficiency of its engine is low. At present, the energy conversion efficiency of the best fuel engine can only reach about 40%, and the remaining 60% of the energy will be lost in the form of heat energy, so the internal combustion engine needs a metal with higher heat resistance as a shell to provide protection.

The electric motor on the electric car has an inherent advantage in energy conversion efficiency, which can reach 90% or higher, and the remaining 10% will be consumed in the form of heat. So as long as the motor does a good job of heat dissipation, there is no need to put forward higher requirements for materials in terms of heat resistance, which makes it possible to use a high-strength plastic shell motor.

In order to solve the effect of the 10% heat generated by the kinetic energy conversion on the plastic casing, a new rectangular heat pipe is used around the stator to achieve more efficient heat dissipation, and a similar heat dissipation design is also used on the rotor to achieve this Part of the heat of 80% (or even higher) is taken away to ensure that the motor does not generate excessively high temperatures during operation to affect the strength of the plastic casing.

In the end, if this plastic case motor can prove to be as reliable as a metal case and can be applied, it can not only save motor manufacturing costs and improve production efficiency, but also reduce the weight of electric vehicles. (Source: insideevs; text / Hu Yongbin)
