How to identify true and false pesticides and treat failed pesticides

Pesticides are widely available in the market today, and many long-term farmers are concerned about purchasing them due to fears of counterfeit products. How can you tell if a pesticide is genuine or fake? When buying pesticides, start by checking the name, specifications, dosage form, toxicity, function, and application method. Then verify the batch number, expiration date, and manufacturer’s name. Most organophosphate insecticides have a shelf life of two years, while water-based formulations last about one year. Carbamate and powder formulations can typically last over three years. A good emulsifiable concentrate should be a clear, uniform liquid. Shake the bottle and let it sit for an hour—there should be no separation or layering. To test, place the bottle in warm water. If the pesticide is still effective, any sediment inside should gradually dissolve and disappear. You can also add a few drops of the pesticide to a container of water. If it turns milky white with no clumping after gentle stirring, it’s in a stable emulsion state and likely a quality product. For wettable powders, check for moisture or clumping. If the powder feels damp or sticks together when touched, it may be partially degraded. If it forms a soft block, it’s probably completely ineffective. Take a small amount of the powder, mix it with water to create a thin paste, then add more water and stir thoroughly. Let it settle. A high-quality pesticide will have good suspension properties, with slow settling and minimal sediment. If the powder settles quickly, the product is likely degraded or faulty. According to the pesticide network, expired or degraded pesticides not only fail to control pests and diseases but can also harm crops through phytotoxicity. The toxicity of these ineffective products may either decrease or increase, making them potentially dangerous. Therefore, it's important to properly dispose of such products. First, they should be buried deeply away from water sources. Second, they should be returned to the seller or manufacturer for safe handling. Always take precautions when dealing with pesticides to ensure both safety and effectiveness.
