The application of ThinkDesign technology in innovative design (3)

1. Stable and non-parametric modeling techniques

Parametric modeling technology is not an unfamiliar concept for designers, and is mainly used in the detailed design stage of products. The parameterless modeling technology is a tool often used in the product innovation design process, covering every stage from concept design to pre-manufacture design. The parametric modeling technology will provide designers with the means to process pictures, sketches, models, etc. . The application of the ThinkDesign software to this technology is described below through the design example of the workbench of the CNC machine tool:

First, using the software 2D migration to 3D method, complete the physical modeling of the workbench, and then assemble the workbench. After measurement (as shown in Figure 6a), it is found that the size of the chute part of the workbench needs to be "320". Adjust to "420".

Second, open the sketch of the model to adjust (see Figure 6b), then you will find that the sketch does not have any size, and the outline of the workbench cannot be changed when you modify it. Just select the "Multiple Stretch" command and you will need to modify it. Part of the sketch is selected by the mouse to determine the offset of the left and right sides after the starting point is 50mm, thus completing the adjustment of the size of the chute.

Finally, when the sketch adjustment is complete, the model file is automatically adjusted and the result is “420” (see Figure 6c).

Through the above examples, designers have an intuitive understanding of the parametric modeling technology. Although only the sketches are processed, the parametric and non-parametric modeling techniques are always used in the ThinkDesign software.

2. Surface and solid hybrid modeling

Solid modeling techniques and surface modeling techniques are widely used in today's parametric CAD technology, but the features between them are independent of each other. Due to changes in the market demand for products, most cases require surface modeling and solid modeling to be combined. The design model of the product can be completed. Therefore, in the product innovation design, the modeling technique of mixing the surface and the solid is proposed. Next, take the blade model of the water pump as an example to illustrate how the ThinkDesign software implements the surface solid hybrid modeling technology:

The surface drawing of the blade is similar to the parametric CAD technique, and the process is not elaborated. The result of the model generation is shown in Figure 7a. Then the command of “Generate Entity” is selected to turn the surface into a solid, and the reflection on the feature tree is “ Entity, but it also has the characteristics of a surface, or it can be modified using the editing capabilities of the surface.

Then, using the solid feature editing command "edge fillet", the R3 fillet is inverted on the upper three sides of the outer surface of the blade. The result is shown in Figure 7b.
