Incidents like the "quality door" scandal in children's furniture are not uncommon, and safety concerns remain the most critical risk associated with such products. To address these issues, China introduced the national standard GB 28007-2011, titled "General Technical Conditions for Children’s Furniture," which came into effect on August 1, 2012. This standard outlines general requirements, safety specifications, and warning labels, making safety and clear warnings mandatory to ensure a safe and eco-friendly environment for children.
One year after the implementation of this standard, it is essential to assess how manufacturers have adhered to the regulations. Are the safety and environmental standards of children’s furniture being properly maintained? In 2013, children’s furniture was included for the first time in national and Zhejiang provincial quality spot checks, highlighting its importance in product supervision. The random inspections focused on several key areas:
**1. Safety-Related Items:**
1. The product should not have dangerous sharp edges or points. Edges and corners must be rounded or chamfered, and there should be no protrusions that could cause harm.
2. All high tables and cabinets over 600mm in height must include connectors to secure them to the wall, along with clear installation instructions.
3. If the product has an enclosed space larger than 0.03m³ and internal dimensions exceeding 150mm, it must have a proper vent, no automatic locking mechanism, and the opening force should not exceed 45N.
4. Products requiring assembly, such as swivel chairs with adjustable mechanisms or pneumatic lift rods, must display clear "Warning" or "Caution" signs, with fonts no smaller than bold No. 4.
**2. Environmental Protection-Related Items:**
1. Levels of toxic elements such as antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, lead, chromium, mercury, and selenium in surface-contactable materials must be within acceptable limits.
2. Formaldehyde emissions from wooden furniture should comply with GB 18580-2001, and free formaldehyde in textiles and leather should also meet specified limits.
3. Textile fabrics and leather must not contain decomposable aromatic amines, and phthalate levels in plastics must be within allowable ranges.
**3. Fire Retardancy-Related Items:**
1. Household soft furniture, including mattresses and sofas, must meet the requirements of GB 17927.1-2011, which evaluates resistance to smoldering cigarettes.
2. Soft furniture used in public spaces must adhere to GB 17927.2, which tests resistance to simulated match flames.
By following these strict guidelines, manufacturers can significantly reduce risks and provide safer, healthier options for children. As awareness grows, parents are becoming more informed and cautious when selecting furniture for their homes. It is crucial that the industry continues to prioritize child safety and environmental responsibility to build trust and ensure long-term success.
