European Parliament approves plans to amend biocide registration regulations

Last month, the European Parliament voted to approve a plan to amend the registration of biocides. At the end of last year, the representatives of the European Parliament and EU member states had reached an agreement on the amendment of the laws on biocides for the time being, which means that this motion, which has dragged on for two years, will be further discussed in the near future.

The new regulations will replace the European Union's Biocide Products Directive (98/8) covering non-crop pesticides. A new registration system will be introduced for the registration of these products within the European Union, but the EU Parliament has not yet included the registration of Rodenticides. In the meantime, EU member states strongly oppose the loss of autonomy in the decision-making power of these products.

After receiving the approval of the EU Ministerial Conference in 2012, the new regulations will take effect on September 1, 2013. The registration of the biocides will have to be evaluated according to the regulations for their dangers and risks.

At present, the original drug has been uniformly assessed within the EU, and the new regulations will introduce a similar system. MEPs environmental department had hoped to include all product types, but eventually rodenticides, avicides, fish killers? And products that control other vertebrate pests and those that contain harmful substances are not covered. These other pest control product types will be gradually introduced into the new system. From September 1, 2013, the company can apply for registration of pesticides, acaricides, insect repellents and attractants across the EU. From January 1, 2020, wood preservatives and molluscicides can be applied for registration in the EU.
