Introduction of lotus

Alias: Lotus, Fuxi, Shuizhi, Zezhi, Shuihua, Shui, Furong, Shuifu, Yuhuan, Grass Furong, June Spring, Chinese Lotus.

Common varieties: White water lily, Qinglian girl, Welcoming hibiscus, Rose red platform, Snow white, Golden age, Qinyuanchun, Small yang, Heavy water, Spring, White crane, Spark.

Morphological characteristics: The lotus has a rhizome with multiple thickened sections. Its petioles are thorny and column-like. The leaves are nearly round, reaching up to 60 cm in diameter, green on the front and covered with a waxy white powder on the back. The flowers grow singly, often longer than the apex, with single or double petals. They come in various colors such as white, pink, deep red, and pale purple. The flowers are inflated and eventually develop into lotus seeds, with one seed in each flower hole.

Reproduction of lotus: As an aquatic plant, the lotus is typically grown in large areas and cultivated for ornamental purposes. To propagate, select 1–3 healthy nodes with strong top buds, plant them head-down, slightly lifting the tail end, and ensure they are level with the soil surface. After planting, keep the soil slightly dry until the plant is established. Then, add 5–10 cm of water and place it in a sunny, sheltered location.

Light and temperature: Lotus plants thrive in full sunlight. They require specific temperature conditions, with an ideal range of 22–30°C. In winter, they can tolerate temperatures between 3–12°C.

Soil: For potted lotus, a mix of pond mud rich in humus is ideal. Alternatively, you can combine garden soil, loess, and sand to create a suitable substrate.

Watering: Potted lotus needs frequent watering during summer, typically once or twice daily. In late autumn and winter, when the plant goes dormant, reduce watering to avoid over-saturation.

Fertilization: During the growing season, apply compound fertilizer or bean cake every two weeks to support healthy growth.

Purchase tips: When buying, it's best to choose small-plant varieties like Hualien potted lotus, which are easier to manage and maintain in gardens or containers.
