China's imports of metal processing machine tools increased in August
Abstract According to Chinese Customs data, in August 2013, China imported 8,219 metalworking machine tools, representing a 15.2% monthly increase. The total import value reached $950 million, up 9.3% compared to the previous month, with an average unit price of $115,700. These figures reflect a slight recovery in demand for high-end machinery during the period.
Looking at the broader picture, from January to August 2013, China imported a total of 53,739 metalworking machine tools, marking a year-on-year decline of 25.3%. The total import value stood at $7.071 billion, down 21.8% compared to the same period in 2012, with an average unit price of $131,600. This suggests that while the volume of imports decreased, the average price per unit increased, possibly due to a shift in the types of machines being imported.
Breaking it down further, from January to June 2013, the import value was $5.251 billion, a drop of 17.2% year-on-year. By July, the figure had risen slightly to $6.12 billion, still showing a 19.5% decline. By the end of August, the total reached $7.071 billion, a 21.8% decrease compared to the same period in 2012. Analysts suggest that the year-on-year decline may have exceeded 20%, with overall imports this year expected to reach around $10 billion—approximately $3 billion less than the 2012 level.
