China Aluminum Industry Net reports that the air blowing method, also known as the bubble flotation method, is a technique developed in the 1970s for purifying molten aluminum. It is particularly effective in removing hydrogen. The process involves injecting inert gases such as nitrogen or argon into the molten aluminum, which creates bubbles. Due to the difference in partial pressure, hydrogen from the melt diffuses into these bubbles and rises to the surface, where it is removed. In addition to hydrogen, the bubbles can also adsorb some oxide inclusions, helping to eliminate impurities from the melt. As the demand for higher purity in molten aluminum has increased, dehydrogenation technology has continuously evolved. Initially, the single-tube injection method was used, but over time, more advanced techniques like the porous blowing head were introduced. Today, the rotary nozzle method has become the preferred choice. Since the 1980s, the use of rotary nozzles has gained popularity in advanced aluminum purification technologies abroad. One notable example is the SNIF method developed by Union Carbide Corporation in the U.S., which utilizes a rotating nozzle system for inert gas flotation. This system features two graphite gas rotating nozzles. As the gas passes through the rotor, it forms fine, evenly distributed bubbles. These bubbles are further stirred by the rotation, ensuring they spread throughout the melt. This increases the contact area between the gas and the liquid, extends the bubbles' residence time in the molten aluminum, and enhances their volume. As a result, both hydrogen and oxide inclusions are effectively carried to the surface, significantly improving the purification process. The hydrogen removal efficiency of the rotary nozzle method is approximately three times higher than that of the single-tube injection method. While the hydrogen content after single-tube treatment is typically around 0.2 ml per 100 mg, the SNIF method can reduce it to 0.08 ml or less. Because of its superior performance, many major aluminum smelting plants have adopted this advanced rotary nozzle blowing technique to ensure high-quality aluminum production.
