A rare blue diamond unearthed in South Africa: the highest in transparency history

**Abstract** Beijing time on January 24th, news broke that a rare blue diamond was recently discovered at the Cullinan Diamond Mine, located 25 miles (40.23 km) from Pretoria, South Africa. The gem is expected to fetch over £10 million (approximately 100 million yuan), and it's said to be one of the most transparent and pure diamonds ever found. A high-quality image of the diamond is shown below:

The diamond will soon be put up for auction, but the mine's owner, Petra Diamonds, remains uncertain about its final price until a buyer emerges. “It all depends on what the main buyer is willing to pay,” they said. Although the diamond is still undergoing further evaluation, the company has already recognized it as a "very special find." Blue diamonds are among the rarest in the world, making up just 0.1% of all diamonds mined annually. Since Petra Diamonds took over the Cullinan Mine in 2008, only four blue diamonds have been found there. The value of a diamond is determined by three key factors: clarity, color, and rarity. This newly discovered blue diamond has already been identified as highly valuable and extremely rare. A spokesperson for Petra Diamonds stated, “This is a very special diamond. You don’t often come across such a large blue diamond with such exceptional purity. There will be many collectors interested in it. Its color is vivid, with remarkable saturation, color, and clarity. It could potentially become a very expensive and significant piece—perhaps even setting a new world record.” Once purchased, the diamond may be cut and polished, which could reduce its weight by one-third to one-half, depending on its quality. Located approximately 37 miles (59.55 km) northeast of Pretoria, the Cullinan Diamond Mine is known for producing some of the world’s most famous gems. While it primarily yields white diamonds, it has a history of producing rare blue stones. The mine produces around 800,000 carats of diamonds annually, generating roughly £133 million ($221 million) in revenue. In 1905, the mine produced the largest gem-quality diamond ever found—a 3,106-carat stone later named the “Cullinan” and set into the British Crown Jewels. Known as the “African Superstar,” it became part of the Queen’s crown. Other notable diamonds from the mine include the 353-carat First Rose, valued at $10 million, and the 545-carat Golden Underarm, the world’s largest cut and enameled diamond, worth $14 million. Since Petra Diamonds took control in 2008, the mine has made several major discoveries, including a 39.9-carat diamond sold for $8.8 million, a 26.6-carat one for $1.45 million, and a 25.5-carat diamond that fetched $16.8 million last year. With this latest discovery, the Cullinan Mine continues to prove its reputation as a source of extraordinary and valuable gems.
