The laser gain medium plays an important role in the thermal conductivity of the material.

Ultrafast lasers are now used in metal micromachining technology, typically in units of one trillionth of a second; and the European Union's research aims to develop femtosecond technology systems, where the power and unit time are much shorter than At the stage of the technical level reached, femtosecond pulsed laser technology is mainly used for the micro-machining and precision improvement of transparent materials, such as glass, ceramics, smart phones and smart tablets.

In order to realize femtosecond pulse laser technology, scientists chose Titanium as the laser crystal material, which is mainly because the wide bandwidth of TiSa emission is ideal for short-pulse laser systems, but the only drawback is that TiSa has poor thermal conductivity. . To this end, scientists have found a breakthrough in laser gain media. The single crystal CVD diamond produced by Element Six is ​​a superior heat conducting material and is very resistant to working conditions at high power.

Project leader Dr. Andreas Voss said that the single crystal CVD diamond produced by Element Six has unique properties, and it has excellent high-temperature heat transfer characteristics, which can generate heat flux density that cannot be achieved by other materials. This allows it to operate as a transparent heat conducting component inside a high power thin disk laser resonator.

At present, the thermal conductivity of CVD diamond produced by Element Six has reached 2200 W/mK, and the birefringence and absorption are also controlled at very low parameter levels. However, for ultrafast pulse laser technology, these properties of CVD diamond still need to be improved. Elementary Six's technical director Adrian Wilson said that in order to successfully implement the TiSa thin-disk ultrafast pulse laser technology, Element Six's single crystal CVD diamond will be further improved and its performance will be more excellent.
