Zhang Yan, a researcher at the China Textile Academy, suggests using a clean paper towel or a few pots of water to test the color fastness and absorbency of the towel. The main issue with low-quality towels is often poor color retention and weak water absorption. A towel with bad color fastness will likely bleed color when rubbed, while some regular products may show floating dye.
When shopping, simply rub the towel with a paper towel a few times. If only a slight stain appears or no stain at all, it means the color fastness is good, and the product is likely of high quality. However, if the paper towel becomes noticeably colored, the towel is prone to fading, indicating lower quality and potentially harmful dyes.
Once you bring the towel home, it’s wise to wash it a few times in clean water. A quality towel should only lose some loose color during the first wash. If it continues to fade each time, it’s best to avoid using it for facial cleansing, as repeated exposure to such dyes can be harmful to your skin over time.
Before purchasing a colorful towel, take a moment to smell it. Some low-quality towels may emit an unusual odor due to the use of banned dyes containing harmful substances like benzidine, which can cause irritation or even long-term health risks. Additionally, some inferior towels may have a fishy or gasoline-like smell, which is not from storage or transportation but rather from oil leaks during manufacturing. High-quality colored towels should have no noticeable scent at all.
When choosing a colored towel, cotton is the best option due to its excellent absorbency and breathability, making it ideal for sensitive skin. When selecting a cotton towel, check the color—high-quality cotton should have an even, soft hue. If the color is overly bright, it may be made from polyester or other synthetic fibers. You can also feel the texture: if it feels uneven, hard, or rough, it might not be 100% cotton.
To further test the quality, pull out two threads from the towel. If they make a crisp sound when rubbed together, it’s a sign of good quality. If there’s no crisp sound, the quality may be poor. Inferior cotton towels often contain a mix of chemical fibers, making them more prone to pilling and irritating the skin. Therefore, it’s best to purchase from reputable stores or supermarkets that guarantee quality and safety.
