Home Textile Tips: When you buy a towel, use a paper towel or use water to distinguish it.

To help you choose a high-quality colored towel, here are some practical tips based on expert advice. Zhang Yan, a researcher at the China Textile Academy, suggests a simple method to test the color fastness of a towel. All you need is a clean paper towel or a few pots of water. The main issue with substandard towels is poor water absorption and color retention. If a towel has weak color fastness, it may easily fade. To check, gently rub the towel with a paper towel. If only a slight stain appears or none at all, it means the color is well-set and the quality is good. However, if the paper towel becomes heavily stained, the towel likely fades quickly, indicating lower quality. After purchasing the towel, it’s a good idea to wash it a few times in clean water. A quality towel will only lose some loose dye during the first wash. But if it keeps fading each time, it’s best not to use it for washing your face, as this could be like applying chemical dyes directly to your skin, which can cause long-term harm. Before buying, take a moment to smell the towel. Some low-quality products may contain harmful dyes, such as those containing benzidine, which can produce an irritating odor. You might also notice a fishy or gasoline-like smell, which is often due to oil leaks from manufacturing equipment, not storage or transportation. High-quality colored towels should have no noticeable scent. When choosing a colored towel, cotton is always the best option. It offers excellent water absorption and breathability, making it ideal for sensitive skin. When selecting a cotton towel, check the color—ideally, it should be even and soft. If the color is too bright, it might be made from polyester or other synthetic fibers. Also, feel the texture: if it feels uneven, hard, or stiff, it may not be pure cotton. A simple test is to pull out two threads and snap them. If they make a crisp sound, it's likely high quality. If not, the quality may be poor. Low-quality cotton towels often mix in a lot of synthetic fibers, which can cause pilling and irritate the skin when used for facial cleansing. To avoid these issues, it's better to buy from reputable stores or supermarkets that guarantee product quality. Always look for certified and trusted brands to ensure safety and comfort.
