When removing a bearing, it's essential to assess whether it can be reused. After removal, carefully examine the raceway surface, rolling elements, contact surfaces, and the condition of the cage. Check for wear, whether the clearance is still appropriate, and if the precision has been compromised. Look for signs of damage, abnormalities, or small ball bearings that are not fully detached. Use a flat-ended tool to rotate the inner ring and check if the outer ring moves smoothly.
For tapered roller bearings and other separable types, inspect the rolling surfaces of both the rollers and the outer ring. For larger bearings, manual rotation may not be possible, so pay close attention to the appearance of the rolling elements, raceway, cage, and ribs. The more critical the bearing’s role in the system, the more thorough the inspection should be.
Determining whether a bearing can be used again depends on the extent of its damage, mechanical performance, application importance, operating conditions, and inspection frequency. However, if any of the following defects are found during the inspection, the bearing should not be used further and must be replaced:
- Cracks or gaps in the inner or outer ring, rolling elements, or cage
- A cracked inner or outer ring or rolling element
- Severe scratches on the rolling surface, ribs, or rolling elements
- Significant wear on the cage or loose rivets
- Rust or marks on the raceway or rolling elements
- Deep dents or bumps on the raceway or rolling elements
- Noticeable creep on the inner or outer diameter surfaces
- Severe discoloration due to overheating
- Damaged seals or dust covers in grease-sealed bearings
