Guarding City Conscience "Underground Workers"
In the early 20th century, French writer Victor Hugo famously described sewers as "the conscience of the city" in his novel *The Tragic World*. This metaphor remains relevant today, especially as urban infrastructure becomes more complex. Beneath the surface of modern cities lies an intricate network of underground pipes and drains, essential for maintaining public health and safety.
In Xuchang, there are unsung heroes—workers who descend into the depths of sewage wells year-round to keep the city’s drainage system running smoothly. These "underground workers" wear gas masks, endure harsh conditions, and work silently to ensure that the city's lifeblood flows without obstruction.
Liu Lin, a 52-year-old worker from Yanzhou, starts his day with the cleaning of a sewage well. His first time down was awkward, but now he's used to it. On a typical morning, he eats a few steamed buns and drinks porridge before heading to the job site. He puts on his rain pants, hard hat, and gas mask, then descends into the well using a ladder. Inside, he uses a sludge shovel to remove waste, carefully transferring it into a bucket. After about 15 minutes, he climbs back up, drenched in sweat, and takes a deep breath of fresh air.
Liu moved to Xuchang four years ago after his wife came to take care of her aunt. He found a job in the sewer maintenance department and has been working there ever since. At first, the smell and heat were unbearable, but he adapted quickly. The wells can be over 3 meters deep, and some even reach 5 meters. If not properly maintained, these systems can cause serious issues, like blockages or flooding.
Working underground is dangerous. Lack of oxygen and toxic gases like methane make it a high-risk job. Before entering, workers set up warning signs, ventilate the area for over an hour, and use blowers to clear the air. They wear safety gear, including helmets and gas masks, and are always accompanied by a team on the surface. Every 15 minutes, they switch shifts to minimize risk.
Despite the tough conditions, Liu finds the job stable and reliable. His salary is modest—around 2,000 yuan a month—but it allows him to live comfortably. He smokes cheap cigarettes, buys second-hand glasses, and watches a small TV he bought years ago. His simple lifestyle reflects the quiet dignity of his work.
To avoid disrupting traffic, most operations happen at night near busy roads and bridges. As one supervisor noted, while the work may go unnoticed, it's crucial for daily life. In recent years, the city has installed safety nets in over 900 wells to prevent accidents.
Xuchang City Municipal Industrial Co., Ltd. currently maintains over 242 kilometers of pipelines, along with thousands of rainwater and sewage wells. With the help of specialized equipment, workers can now clean more efficiently. However, challenges remain. Some residents misuse the sewers, pouring oil and trash into them, causing frequent blockages.
As Hugo once said, sewers reflect the character of a city. Maintaining them is a shared responsibility. Every citizen plays a role in keeping the urban drainage system functioning smoothly.
