Sand battery life is 3 times that of ordinary batteries

Scientists at the University of California, Riverside have developed a new type of lithium-ion battery that has more than three times the performance and lifetime of conventional lithium-ion batteries. What's even more amazing is that the main raw material needed to make this kind of battery is the ordinary sand that can't be normal.

Researchers say the new technology is expected to break the battery bottleneck faced by current electronic products such as smartphones, making the day a history. Related papers were published in the journal Nature Science Report.

The invention of this battery is Zachary Favors, a graduate student at the University of California, Riverside. Favors said he was inspired by the use of sand to make batteries when he was surfing on a beach in San Clemente, California six months ago. His main research direction is to develop better-performing lithium-ion batteries for personal electronics and electric vehicles, and is looking for the ideal anode material for new batteries.

Most lithium ion batteries currently use graphite as the anode. Many scientists have tried to replace it with silicon, but silicon is highly susceptible to degradation and is difficult to mass produce.

Favors hopes that the sand made of quartz and silica will help him solve these two problems. He brought the sand back to the lab and converted it to pure nano-silicon through a series of steps. This pure nano-silicon has a sponge-like 3D porous structure, which is the key to improving the performance of nano-silicon cells.
