MIG/MAG welding of ultra-thin plates - CMT cold metal transition technology

MIG/MAG welding is currently the most widely used and economical welding process in the world. However, due to defects such as large heat input, severe deformation, and unavoidable splash, it has limited its application in some fields, especially the thin plate below 1mm is the "forbidden zone" for its application.

Fronius has been leading the development of welding technology in the world. It began welding research on steel and aluminum as early as 1991. In 1997, based on steel and aluminum welding technology and non-splash arc ignition technology, it was developed after five years of hard work. CMT cold metal transition technology has opened up new areas for the application of MIG/MAG welding, and the form of MIG/MAG droplet transfer has also been given a new definition.

First, the working principle of CMT cold metal transition technology

CMT cold metal transition technology is developed on the basis of short-circuit transition. The common short-circuit transition process is: the wire melts to form a droplet - the droplet is short-circuited with the molten pool - the short-circuit bridge breaks, and the short circuit is accompanied by a large current (large The heat input) and the splash. The CMT transition mode is just the opposite. When the droplet is short-circuited, the digital power supply output current is almost zero, and the back-drawing motion of the wire helps the droplet to fall off, which fundamentally eliminates the factor of spatter.

There are three distinct differences between CMT welding and ordinary MIG/MAG welding:

1. Combine the motion of wire feeding with the process of droplet transfer for the first time.

2. The voltage and current are almost zero during the droplet transfer

3. The back pumping motion of the wire helps the droplets fall off

......

Second, the advantages of CMT welding compared to ordinary MIG/MAG welding

1. CMT low heat input welding

......

2. CMT precise welding arc length control, the arc is more stable

......

3. uniform weld, weld penetration consistent, high quality weld repeatability

......

4. truly no weld spatter

......

5. Good bridging ability, reduced assembly clearance requirements

......

6. Faster welding speed

Third, CMT and pulse hybrid transition technology

Fourth, the application and prospects of CMT process

The CMT welding method expands the areas that ordinary MIG/MAG welding cannot cover because of its faster welding speed, better bridging ability, smaller deformation, more uniform weld seam, and no spatter. Its main application areas are reflected in

Christoph.Kammerhuber, Asia Pacific Manager of Funis International, introduced the CMT cold metal transition technology, which is widely used for MIG/MAG welding of ultra-thin plates.

V. Conclusion

The CMT process is another major breakthrough in the development of digital welding technology by fronius. For the first time, the movement of the welding wire is combined with the droplet transfer process, and the cold-hot alternating welding is realized during the welding process, which greatly reduces the heat input. This innovative process has a small heat input, small deformation, no splash, good bridging ability, uniform weld seam, high welding speed and low operating cost, which provides a perfect solution for the welding of thin plates, and has been used in many European states. Accepted and adopted by companies in Japan and the United States.
