Wang Guangzu: Two monuments in two major battles

**Abstract** What is the allure of a diamond, that ancient and eternal crystal? No one has ever been able to fully explain or understand it. Yes, that’s true. For thousands of years, it has drawn countless explorers to uncover its secrets, and the past servants have gradually revealed its mysterious charm. Diamonds, the timeless gem, carry an enchantment that transcends time. Despite its beauty, no one can clearly articulate its full appeal. That's why, for over half a century, I've had a deep connection with this precious material, starting from the early 1960s. This journey has spanned more than fifty years—brief in the grand scale of human history, but long in the context of a single life. Time flies, and through countless seasons, I’ve remained devoted, passionate, and unwavering. Over these decades, I've experienced both triumphs and trials. Each success, each failure, brought valuable lessons and unforgettable moments. Among them, two major campaigns stand out: the “121” campaign and the “Pilot” campaign, which were pivotal in the development of China's synthetic diamond industry. These efforts not only marked a new era in synthetic diamonds but also laid the foundation for the industrialization of superhard materials. The “121” campaign was a breakthrough that opened the door to synthetic diamond technology in China. It was a high-stakes battle against technological blockades and limited resources. With determination and teamwork, we achieved what many thought impossible. The success of the “Pilot” campaign then paved the way for large-scale production and commercial application. In the “121” campaign, we faced immense challenges. We had to design and build ultra-high pressure devices, calibrate temperature and pressure, and solve theoretical problems related to diamond growth. Through rigorous research and collaboration, we eventually synthesized the first Chinese synthetic diamond on December 6, 1963. That night was unforgettable, filled with joy and excitement as we realized our dream. However, even after such a success, there were unexpected setbacks. A false alarm nearly caused panic when the sample was lost. But through quick action and determination, we recovered it, proving that perseverance pays off. The success of the “121” campaign shocked the West, who doubted whether a technologically backward nation could achieve such a feat. But we did, and it became a great victory for the country. The second campaign, the “Pilot,” focused on transforming laboratory results into real-world applications. We faced new challenges, including technical barriers like high-pressure sealing. Through innovation and hard work, we overcame these obstacles. One small but crucial innovation—a bevel on the carbide anvil—proved to be a game-changer. Throughout these battles, the key words were "hard work" and "inspiration." Every small step contributed to the larger success. Even a simple bowl of noodles from a visiting leader was a symbol of appreciation and pride. Today, China’s synthetic diamond industry stands strong, thanks to the dedication of many. The legacy of these campaigns lives on, inspiring future generations to pursue excellence and innovation. As we look ahead, the path to a stronger and more advanced nation continues, fueled by the same spirit that drove us forward. Let us celebrate the achievements of our predecessors and continue building a brighter future. Their contributions will always be remembered, and their efforts will echo through history.
