On March 13, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a food additive that allows the use of benzoic acid as a feed for pig feed in animal feed and drinking water. This rule is effective as of the date of publication. This rule may submit a written application or hearing before April 14, 2014. Details are as follows: (1) The use of additives or intended to be used as a feed acidifier to lower the pH, the amount of whole pig feed should not exceed 0.5% of the total feed. (2) The additive comprises not less than 99.5% of benzoic acid (CAS No. 65-85-0) by weight of 2-methylbiphenyl, 3-methylbiphenyl, 4-methylbiphenyl, benzyl The benzoic acid ester, and the isomer are not more than 0.01% by weight of the total of dimethylbiphenyl. (3) In order to ensure the safe use of additives, in addition to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and other information required by paragraph (b) of this section, the label and logo shall include: (1) The name of the additive. (2) Appropriate instructions for use, including a statement that benzoic acid must be uniformly applied and thoroughly mixed throughout the pig's feed. The entire swine feed should be labeled with benzoic acid. (3) Appropriate warnings and safety precautions regarding benzoic acid. (4) A warning statement stating that benzoic acid is irritating. (5) Information on emergency assistance in case of accidental exposure. (6) Contact the address and the telephone number of the adverse reaction report or request a copy of the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
