When utilizing Cr12 steel or high-speed steel in cold working molds, one significant issue that arises is their brittleness and susceptibility to cracking during operation. To address this, it's essential to refine the carbides through thorough forging processes. Additionally, developing new steel grades could provide a solution. The focus of these new steel grades should be on reducing the carbon content and the levels of carbide-forming elements. Over the past few years, several new steel grades have been introduced and promoted in China, as outlined in Table 4.11. Cr4W2MoV steel boasts excellent properties such as high hardness, superior wear resistance, and good hardenability. It also demonstrates strong tempering stability and balanced mechanical performance, making it suitable for applications like dry silicon steel sheet dies. This steel can extend the lifespan by over three times compared to Cr12MoV steel. However, its forging temperature range is quite narrow, which makes it prone to cracking in certain areas, like Hexian County. Therefore, strict control over the forging temperature and operational procedures is crucial. On the other hand, Cr2Mn2SiWMoV steel features a lower quenching temperature, minimal quenching distortion, and high hardenability. It’s reported that this steel can replace W18Cr4V and Cr12MoV steel, with the notable advantage of significantly improving the carbide uniformity and toughness of the material. In recent developments, there has been a growing interest in enhancing the efficiency and durability of cold work tool steels. Engineers are exploring ways to optimize the composition of these materials further, balancing strength with flexibility. For instance, some researchers are experimenting with alternative alloying elements to achieve better thermal stability without compromising toughness. These efforts reflect the ongoing commitment within the industry to innovate and improve upon existing technologies. Moreover, environmental considerations are now playing an increasingly important role in material selection. Manufacturers are looking into more sustainable practices, including recycling scrap metals and minimizing waste during production. By adopting greener methods, they hope not only to meet regulatory standards but also to contribute positively to global sustainability goals. As we move forward, continued advancements in metallurgy will undoubtedly play a key role in shaping the future of cold work tooling solutions.
