Over the past few weeks, our team has been conducting a series of "Helping You Power" activities, visiting homes in Futian, Nanshan, and Luohu districts. We’ve had great feedback from residents, and it’s been an enlightening experience for everyone involved. On November 9, I joined a power-saving expert from the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau, Mr. Wang Wenfeng, as we visited two families in Baoan District. Together, we checked their electrical safety and shared practical tips to help them save energy. Cleaning Your Range Hood Wisely Ms. Yang, who resides in Baoan District, has a household of five and typically uses around 200 kWh of electricity each month. During our visit, Mr. Wang noticed a significant buildup of grease on her kitchen range hood. He advised Ms. Yang: "Cleaning the grease properly can indeed reduce your electricity usage. However, avoid wiping the blades directly. Instead, spray the detergent onto the blades and let them spin until they're clean." Apparently, wiping the blades directly can cause deformation, increasing resistance and consuming more energy during operation. Usually, the grease doesn’t reach the motor itself, so focusing on cleaning the outer surface suffices. Additionally, when using the range hood, it’s best to start with a high-speed setting and then switch to a lower speed. The initial startup requires the most power, and starting on low speed can be inefficient. Also, many people keep the kitchen lights on while cooking, but using the built-in smaller lights on the range hood can save energy. Mr. Wang also reminded Ms. Yang not to leave the range hood running unnecessarily and to unplug it when not in use. Maximizing Energy Efficiency with Your Washing Machine While at Ms. Yang's house, I observed her washing machine in action. She asked how she could use it more efficiently. Mr. Wang suggested soaking clothes for about 15 minutes before starting the machine. This allows the detergent to penetrate deeply into the fabric, making manual pre-washing of particularly dirty areas like collars and cuffs easier. This approach reduces overall washing time and saves electricity. Once you have enough laundry to fill the machine, sort the clothes by type, amount, and level of soiling before selecting the appropriate wash cycle. For delicate fabrics like silk or wool, use the gentle setting, while cotton, blends, and synthetic fibers can handle medium settings. Heavy items like thick blankets may require a stronger setting. Mr. Wang also emphasized the importance of regularly checking the tension of your washing machine belt. Older machines, especially those over three years old, tend to experience slippage in the belt, reducing efficiency. Tightening the belt promptly can save energy. Optimizing Oven Usage Mr. Su runs a small plastics factory that handles injection molding, metalwork, and silk-screen printing. His factory spends over 10,000 yuan on electricity every month, with peak season costs significantly higher. Mr. Wang suggested that for products on the wet printing line, if they don’t need to go through the industrial oven, they should be dried using fans instead. This simple change can result in substantial energy savings. The industrial oven is the biggest energy consumer in Mr. Su’s factory. Mr. Wang recommended designing the oven with optimal power requirements. An oven with excessive power will consume more electricity, while one with insufficient power will reduce productivity. When purchasing industrial ovens, it’s essential to select products from reputable manufacturers. Multiple temperature settings can be configured to match the heat requirements of different products, allowing for selective activation of heating units. Developing good operational habits, such as turning off the main switch when the oven is idle, is equally important. Mr. Su’s factory lighting is currently suboptimal, requiring additional lighting even during the day. Mr. Wang proposed replacing the existing fluorescent tubes with LED lights, which can cut energy usage by over 40%. Although LED tubes are initially more expensive, their long-term cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits make them a worthwhile investment.
