Soot fan blades do not wipe before washing

In the first three "Powering You Up" events, our reporters and energy-saving experts visited homes in Futian, Nanshan, and Luohu districts, quickly gaining popularity among residents. On November 9th, I accompanied a power-saving expert from the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau, Mr. Wang Wenfeng, to visit two households in Baoan District. We conducted a thorough inspection of their electrical safety and shared practical tips for reducing energy consumption.

Don't Wipe Range Hood Blades

Mrs. Yang, who resides in Baoan District, has a family of five and typically uses around 200 kWh of electricity per month. On the 9th, Mr. Wang visited her home and noticed significant grease buildup on the range hood in her kitchen. He advised her against wiping the blades directly, suggesting instead to spray detergent onto the blades and let them spin to distribute it evenly. This method prevents blade deformation caused by oil residue, which increases resistance and consumes more energy. Generally, grease does not infiltrate the motor, so cleaning the outer surfaces suffices.

Additionally, when using the range hood, it's best to start with a high-speed setting before switching to a lower speed. The initial startup consumes the most power, and a gradual transition helps conserve energy. Furthermore, many people tend to leave the kitchen lights on while cooking, but using the built-in small lights on the range hood can significantly reduce electricity usage. Mr. Wang also emphasized avoiding prolonged use of the range hood as a ventilation tool. Always remember to unplug it when not in use.

Pre-soak Clothes Before Using the Washing Machine

While visiting Mrs. Yang's home, we noticed her washing machine in action. She expressed interest in learning how to use it more efficiently. Mr. Wang explained that pre-soaking clothes for about 15 minutes allows the detergent to penetrate effectively. For heavily soiled areas like collars and cuffs, manual scrubbing beforehand can reduce washing time and save energy. It's also wise to accumulate enough laundry before running the machine to avoid unnecessary multiple cycles.

Sorting clothes based on quantity, fabric type, and level of soiling can optimize energy use. For instance, delicate fabrics like silk or wool should be washed on a gentle cycle, whereas cotton and synthetic blends can handle a moderate setting. Heavier materials may require a stronger cycle. Additionally, rinsing clothes for about 3 to 4 minutes and dehydrating them for approximately 1.5 minutes is sufficient. Extending dehydration time beyond this point offers no additional benefit.

Choosing the appropriate washing mode is equally important. Modern washing machines offer options like strong, medium, and weak settings, each consuming varying amounts of energy. Delicate fabrics should be washed gently, while sturdy items can handle higher intensity settings. Regularly checking the tension of the washing machine belt is also crucial. After three years of use, belts tend to slacken, impacting performance. Tightening the belt promptly can enhance efficiency and save electricity.

Optimize Oven Usage

Mr. Su, who owns a plastics manufacturing plant, shared that his monthly electricity bill exceeds ten thousand yuan, with peak-season consumption being particularly high. Energy costs account for roughly 10% of his business turnover, making it a substantial expense for his small enterprise. Mr. Wang recommended that Mr. Su consider alternative drying methods for products on the wet printing line, such as using fans instead of ovens, which could result in significant savings.

The industrial oven is the single largest consumer of electricity in Mr. Su's factory. Mr. Wang emphasized the importance of designing the oven with optimal power requirements. Too much power leads to excessive energy consumption, while insufficient power hampers productivity. When purchasing ovens, he advised selecting those from reputable manufacturers. Multiple temperature settings can be configured to activate specific heating elements based on required temperatures, maximizing energy efficiency. Developing good operational habits, such as turning off the main switch when the oven is idle, further contributes to conservation.

Lighting within Mr. Su's facility is inadequate, necessitating artificial illumination even during daylight hours. Mr. Wang proposed replacing fluorescent tubes with LED lights, which offer over 40% energy savings. Although LED tubes currently come at a higher upfront cost, their long-term benefits—both financial and environmental—are undeniable.
