Color recognition and handling skills of excavator cylinder

Many excavator operators have faced the issue of cylinder discoloration and often assume it's a quality problem. They tend to be in a rush, but in reality, this is a common occurrence. The discoloration process usually follows a specific pattern: the cylinder first turns blue, then darkens to purple, and eventually becomes black. It's important to understand that the discoloration isn't actually a flaw in the cylinder itself. Instead, it's caused by a thin, colored film forming on the surface. This happens due to high temperatures and chemical reactions within the hydraulic system. The color changes are part of a natural oxidation process. There are several reasons behind this phenomenon: 1. **High temperatures in the hydraulic system** – When the machine is working hard, especially in cold weather, the piston rod may come into contact with sudden temperature drops, leading to thermal stress and discoloration. 2. **Using incorrect hydraulic oil** – If non-approved or low-quality hydraulic oil is used during maintenance, discoloration can appear quickly, usually within days. This is often due to differences in the performance of extreme pressure additives. 3. **Poor plating process** – If the piston rod's plating layer was not applied properly, small cracks might form on the surface. These can be seen under a magnifying glass. 4. **Oil seal and additive reactions** – Blue discoloration is typically caused by oil seals and additives sticking to the rod at high temperatures. Blackening, on the other hand, results from lead-based additives in the wear sleeve reacting under heat. This issue is most commonly seen in the front bucket cylinder, which is used more frequently. High hydraulic oil temperatures are often the main cause. To prevent this, it's recommended to clean the radiator regularly to maintain proper cooling. If the discoloration is very light, you can simply leave it as it may fade over time. However, if the color is more intense, it's best to replace the oil seal and wear sleeve. Also, make sure to avoid excessive hydraulic oil temperatures. With these steps, the cylinder should return to normal after some time.
