Baizilian's maintenance skills
Baizilian, also known as Zucchini, is a perennial herb belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family. It features broad, lance-shaped, thick green leaves and fleshy, short roots that grow underground. The flower stalk can reach 60-90 cm in height, with an inflorescence at the top. It typically produces 15-30 blue flowers, and its blooming period lasts from June to August. Even when not in bloom, the attractive foliage makes it a favorite among plant lovers who enjoy growing it in pots.
Native to South Africa, Baizilian thrives in warm and humid climates but is not very cold-tolerant. It prefers sunlight but can tolerate partial shade. It requires well-drained, sandy loam soil rich in organic matter. The primary method of propagation is through ramets (vegetative offshoots), which is best done in spring or autumn, with autumn being more common. Spring ramets may not flower in the same year. Potted plants should be divided every three years. If left undivided for too long, it can negatively affect growth and flowering. When dividing, each new plant should have at least 2-3 buds. After division, the plants should be kept in the shade for a week before being moved into direct sunlight. While seed propagation is possible, it takes over five years for the plant to flower, making this method less popular.
For optimal growth, mix 3 parts garden soil with 1 part ash and compost. Place the plant in a semi-shaded, moist area. From June to September, avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn. Water regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. During summer, ensure adequate hydration and mist the plants and surrounding area to maintain humidity and cool temperatures. Before fertilizing, stop watering for a day to allow the soil to drain. After fertilizing, rinse the leaves with clean water. Alternate between organic manure, cake fertilizer, and chemical compounds, applying them every 10-15 days.
When propagating via ramets, provide extra nutrients to encourage earlier blooming. After flowering, remove the spent blooms and apply fertilizer promptly. Stop fertilizing after October and move the plant indoors to a humid, frost-free location when temperatures drop to 1-2°C. Ensure the temperature stays above 0°C during winter. At this stage, reduce watering and keep the soil slightly moist without overwatering.
