Open the door of Chengdu furniture internationalization

In the global market, Chengdu has made remarkable progress in its furniture industry. From an initial export value of just $20 million to over $1 billion, the city's furniture sector has undergone a dramatic transformation. This international journey began in 2006, though it was more than two decades behind coastal enterprises that had already established themselves on the world stage. According to Rong Yuwei, Secretary General of the Sichuan Furniture Import and Export Chamber of Commerce, in the early stages, Chengdu’s furniture exports were minimal—only $20.34 million annually. That figure was equivalent to the yearly sales of a mid-sized furniture company. Yet, at the time, there were as many as 4,000 furniture companies operating in Chengdu. Fast forward to last year, and the export value soared to $1 billion, with an annual growth rate of 380%. Today, over 50 Chengdu-based furniture companies are exporting their uniquely styled products globally, setting new standards for the industry. The Chengdu Furniture Fair played a pivotal role in opening the door to internationalization. Eight years ago, Chengdu’s furniture industry was largely confined to domestic markets, with few companies having any experience or awareness of exporting. Many lacked the necessary foreign trade management skills, and some didn’t even know how to navigate the export process. Finding reliable foreign trade partners was a major challenge. However, the "barrel theory" reminds us that success comes from addressing weaknesses. Today, Chengdu furniture companies are leveraging international design teams, advanced equipment, and top-tier management systems. As a result, international development is no longer just a goal for individual companies but a defining characteristic of the entire industry. Much of this progress can be credited to the Chengdu Furniture Fair, which has become a vital platform for connecting local manufacturers with global resources. Since 2000, the fair has attracted international brands like German Jintian Haomai, which helped kickstart Chengdu’s international expansion. Over time, other global names such as Biesse, Oudondo, and Jianfang joined, along with international furniture material suppliers like Asia International Furniture Material Center. Additionally, representatives from organizations like the Wisconsin Agriculture Department, Pennsylvania Hardwood Development Committee, and the American Hardwood Export Committee have participated, bringing in a wealth of expertise and opportunities. This year, the French Timber Association will also make its debut, planning larger exhibitions in the future. Moreover, international designers from Spain, Italy, Hong Kong, and Taiwan have been actively involved in the fair. Through this platform, Chengdu’s furniture companies have gained access to high-quality international resources, enabling them to grow and compete on a global scale. The Chengdu Furniture Fair has truly transformed the city into a key player in the international furniture market.
