Home new regulations or doors and windows industry reshuffle

In recent years, the Chinese home furnishings and interior decoration industry has witnessed significant regulatory developments aimed at improving quality, transparency, and consumer protection. Several new standards have been introduced or implemented this year, including the "Standards for the Quality Acceptance of Residential Interior Decoration Projects," the "Quality Acceptance Criteria for Home Furnishings," and the "Design Guidelines for Domestic Cabling." Industry experts believe that these regulations are essential in curbing unscrupulous business practices and protecting the rights of consumers, particularly in sectors like wooden doors and furniture. One of the most notable updates came on January 23, when the Ministry of Commerce issued the "Standards for the Operation of the Home Furnishing Industry Service," which officially took effect on September 1. The new guidelines bring three key changes: First, home furnishing stores must adopt a first-payment system. If any product is found to be defective, customers should receive immediate refunds or compensation. Even after the seller leaves the site, they are still required to provide proper after-sales service and maintenance. Second, the project contract budget proposals must be accurate. Any underreporting of project quantities or costs could lead to financial consequences for the organization. If the underreported amount exceeds 8% of the total contract value, the excess will be covered by the company, unless the customer specifically requested additional work. Third, companies must clearly inform customers about the repair time and scope for various renovation elements such as flooring, doors and windows, ceilings, tiling, electrical systems, walls, and cabinets. Additionally, foundational renovation work will carry a minimum two-year warranty, while waterproofing works will have a minimum five-year warranty. Industry insiders believe that these new rules will put more pressure on smaller businesses, as larger companies typically focus more on quality and customer satisfaction. Zhao Jia, an industry expert, pointed out that the implementation of these standards is a step toward greater accountability across the sector. Liu Mingde, another industry insider, emphasized that meeting national standards is not enough—companies must exceed them to ensure long-term success. He believes that these regulations are beneficial for both the industry's development and consumer confidence. Zhu Changling, chairman of the China Furniture Association, stated that the new specifications will help optimize the entire home market, promote sustainable growth, and lay the foundation for standardized industry practices. He also noted that companies lacking integrity may eventually be weeded out of the market. Ren Cheng, vice president of Ren Cheng, highlighted that the wooden door and home industry has a relatively short history with low entry barriers, leading to a chaotic market environment. He stressed the importance of establishing clear service standards and ensuring that the implementation of these rules is transparent and enforceable. By doing so, the industry can create more space for reputable companies while allowing less competitive ones to exit naturally.
