Building Materials Selection Guide: Buying Tiles with Six Tips

Scratch the tile surface with a sharp object. If scratches appear, it indicates that the glaze is prone to wear. Once the glaze is worn down, cleaning the tile will become more difficult. A clear and natural color suggests high-quality porcelain, while unclear or dull colors may indicate lower quality. When purchasing, inspect the tile’s surface closely from one meter away with your naked eye. If you spot pinholes, it could mean the glaze hasn’t fully fused, which might lead to dirt buildup over time.

1. Apply a few drops of tea or water on the back of the tile. After a few minutes, check how much the liquid is absorbed. If the water is not absorbed quickly, it means the tile has a low water absorption rate, which is a good sign of quality.

2. Tap the tile gently with your fingers or a small object. A crisp, ringing sound indicates a denser, harder, and higher-quality porcelain. A dull sound may suggest lower density and poor craftsmanship.

3. Test the tile by scratching its surface with a sharp object. If visible scratches appear, it shows that the glaze is weak and may wear off easily. Once the glaze is damaged, the tile surface becomes harder to clean and maintain.

4. Observe the color of the tile. A vibrant, natural hue suggests high-quality porcelain, while faded or unclear colors may indicate lower quality. The clarity of the color can be a strong indicator of the tile’s overall quality.

5. When buying tiles, check the surface for pinholes under normal lighting from about one meter away. If you see any, it means the glaze hasn’t fully bonded, which could lead to long-term issues like dirt accumulation and reduced durability.

6. Check for warping by looking at the edge of the tile with your naked eye. If the edges are uneven or curved, it could affect the tile’s stability and performance over time, especially when installed in large areas.
