Method for treating ash after aluminum smelting

Aluminum smelting is an essential process in the production of aluminum, but it also generates a byproduct known as aluminum ash. This ash consists of various components such as alumina, aluminum nitride, other oxides, chlorides, and metallic aluminum. Proper handling of this material is crucial, as improper disposal can lead to environmental issues, operational inefficiencies, and loss of valuable resources. One of the key concerns in the recycled aluminum industry is the economic value of recovering aluminum from the ash. The aluminum content in the ash typically ranges between 45% and 75%, and since the amount of ash produced is about 15% of the total molten aluminum, the potential for recovery is significant. Optimizing the recovery rate of aluminum from this ash directly impacts the profitability of the recycling process. If the processing isn't efficient, it could result in substantial financial losses for the industry. The cost of producing recycled aluminum is also heavily influenced by how effectively the ash is processed. For example, a factory with a monthly melting capacity of 3,000 tons can generate up to 450 tons of aluminum ash, containing approximately 202.5 to 337.5 tons of aluminum. At a 45% recovery rate, around 90 to 152 tons of aluminum can be recovered. However, if the recovery rate increases to 70%, that number jumps to 142 to 236 tons, representing a difference of 52 to 84 tons. This variation equates to a gross margin impact of 2% to 3%. Although higher recovery rates are beneficial, they also leave behind residues that are more difficult to manage. In some cases, the remaining material contains over 30% aluminum, making it suitable for use as a deoxidizer in steelmaking. However, many recycling companies prefer to avoid high-level recovery due to the complexity of managing the residue. Instead, they often sell the ash to specialized treatment plants or steelmaking facilities. As a result, the efficiency of aluminum recovery from ash plays a critical role in determining the overall cost and sustainability of the recycled aluminum industry.
