Many wood flooring retailers claim their products can work with underfloor heating, but in reality, many factory technicians have little to no experience with these systems and may not fully understand how they operate.

As a result, the performance of regular wood flooring in an underfloor heating setup can be unpredictable. While some non-heat-resistant floors might survive short-term exposure, most homeowners expect their flooring to last more than just a couple of years. Ideally, you want a floor that can endure for over a decade. That’s why it’s highly recommended to choose a flooring material specifically designed for underfloor heating.

The second factor to consider is the thickness of the floor. Underfloor heating works by radiating heat from the floor upwards, and the structure of wood fibers can act as an insulator. If the floor is too thick—over 14 mm—the heat may not reach the surface efficiently, leading to poor heat distribution and higher energy costs. Third, it's important to select a floor with a moderate thermal resistance coefficient. This value affects both heat storage and heat transfer. A higher thermal resistance means less efficient heat transfer, so the floor will feel colder and take longer to warm up. Conversely, a lower thermal resistance allows better heat conduction, improving the overall performance of the system.

Fourth, take into account the local climate and humidity levels. The chosen flooring should have a low deformation coefficient to prevent warping or cracking due to moisture changes. This is especially important in areas with high humidity or fluctuating temperatures.

Finally, make sure the floor has anti-cracking properties. Underfloor heating causes continuous temperature changes, which can stress the floor over time. Without proper anti-cracking measures, the floor may develop cracks or other structural issues within a few years. Choosing a high-quality, heat-resistant flooring solution ensures long-term durability and comfort in your home.
