Do not let the heat-conducting oil into a machine ***
In recent years, the fire safety situation in printing and dyeing enterprises in Shaoxing County has become increasingly critical, especially under high-temperature conditions. The use of heat-transfer oil in setting machines has emerged as a major concern for fire insurance and safety management. According to reports, numerous incidents have occurred across the county, with many printing and dyeing companies experiencing significant fire accidents.
At a recent fire prevention conference held by the local printing and dyeing industry, Captain Gong Cheng of the county fire brigade emphasized the dangers posed by these setting machines. He pointed out that the risk of fire is not only high but also difficult to control, making it a serious hidden danger in production safety. This has led to increased scrutiny and stricter regulations from both local authorities and the fire department.
One incident at a newly established printing and dyeing company in the Binhai Industrial Zone highlighted the risks involved. A sudden fire broke out in the setting machine, causing the steel pipes to burn intensely. Fortunately, the staff managed to extinguish the fire quickly, preventing major damage. Chen Jianye, the general manager of Xinfa Printing and Dyeing, still recalls the event with fear, emphasizing how close they came to disaster.
Zhang Guohua, chairman of Shumei Knitting and Printing Co., Ltd., shared similar concerns. He noted that late-night hours are particularly risky, as workers tend to be more relaxed and less vigilant. “The worst thing is receiving a call at midnight,†he said. “A fire can destroy everything—financial losses, injuries, even the end of a business.†For Zhang, fire safety is not just a regulation—it’s a constant worry.
Shaoxing County is home to over 200 printing and dyeing companies, with more than 1,900 setting machines in operation. In 2012, there were 158 fires reported in these machines, and this year alone, 84 incidents have already been recorded. With the number of fires rising each year, the local fire department is under pressure to find effective solutions.
To address the issue, some companies have taken proactive measures. Red, Green, and Blue Printing, for example, regularly check and clean the filter screens of their setting machines. As Deputy General Manager Jiang Xuye explained, clogged filters can lead to flammable debris buildup, which acts as a potential ignition source. Cleaning them regularly significantly reduces the risk of fire.
However, complete prevention remains challenging. That’s why Jiaye Printing and Dyeing Innovation has adopted a steam-based fire suppression system. When a fire occurs, steam is released into the machine chassis, effectively suffocating the flames within minutes. “It’s fast, efficient, and very reliable,†said the company representative. All their setting machines are equipped with this system, and the approach has been praised by the fire department.
Lu Weimin, head of the Fire Brigade, confirmed the effectiveness of steam fire suppression. “Steam can quickly remove oxygen from the fire zone, stopping combustion rapidly,†he said. “This method is much more effective than traditional methods like dry powder or water.â€
Despite these efforts, many fire safety issues persist. Inspections by the fire department have revealed widespread problems, including illegal structures blocking evacuation routes, lack of proper fire separation, and unsafe living conditions in some factories. Many companies still operate under the “three-in-one†model, where production, living, and storage areas are combined, increasing the risk of fire spread.
Additionally, fire protection equipment is often neglected or damaged. Employees frequently lack training on how to use fire-fighting tools, leading to panic during emergencies and delayed responses. These factors contribute to higher fire damage and slower recovery.
In response, Deputy Magistrate Hu Guowei called for greater awareness and stricter compliance with fire safety standards. He urged all printing and dyeing companies to remain vigilant, especially regarding the use of setting machines. “We must never let these machines become the source of disaster,†he said. “Fire safety should always be our top priority.â€
