Japan finds green algae clock to correct genes or increase production efficiency

A recent study published in the online edition of the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" on July 30th revealed an intriguing discovery about green algae. According to a report by the Japan News Service, researchers led by Professor Matsuo Takuya from the University of Nagoya and Professor Shi Pu, a retired professor, found that Chlorella, a type of green algae used in biofuel production, can naturally adjust its internal biological clock through exposure to sunlight.

The study highlights how the algae's circadian rhythm is influenced by light, specifically through the degradation of a protein called "ROCK 15," which plays a key role in regulating the algae's internal clock. When exposed to sunlight, this protein breaks down quickly, helping to reset the algae’s biological timing. This natural correction mechanism could be harnessed to improve the efficiency of biofuel production.

By artificially controlling the circadian clock of Chlorella, scientists believe they could enhance the algae’s ability to produce energy-rich compounds, potentially leading to more sustainable and efficient biofuel technologies. The findings open up new possibilities for renewable energy research and could have significant implications for future green energy solutions.

This breakthrough not only deepens our understanding of how organisms regulate their internal clocks but also offers a promising avenue for optimizing biofuel production processes. As researchers continue to explore these mechanisms, we may see a new era of bioenergy development driven by nature’s own timekeepers.
