Bloodstone quality evaluation method

Bloodstone Quality Evaluation Method:

Quality

The evaluation of bloodstone quality involves several key factors that determine its overall value and beauty. These elements are crucial for both collectors and buyers looking to understand the true worth of a bloodstone piece.

1. "Blood": The quality of the "blood" is assessed based on four main aspects: color, amount, concentration, and shape. A high-quality bloodstone should have a vibrant, lively red color that blends naturally with the "ground." The more blood present, the better, especially if it's thick and evenly distributed. Blood in the form of veins or large patches is most desirable, followed by small dots or specks.

2. Clarity: A high-quality bloodstone should be free from cracks or visible flaws. Any imperfections can significantly reduce its value and aesthetic appeal.

3. "Ground": The "ground" refers to the base material of the bloodstone. Its quality is judged by color, transparency, luster, and hardness. The ideal ground should be deep in color, slightly translucent, and have a soft waxy sheen. It should also be relatively soft compared to the blood portion, allowing the red color to stand out effectively.

Factors Affecting Price

First, the color of the blood. Bright red is the most valuable, followed by deep red, while dark red is considered lower quality. Bright red is often referred to as "blood-activating blood," whereas dark red is called "dead blood" because it looks dull and lifeless, like coagulated blood.

Second, the amount of blood. For high-end pieces, the blood content should be over 30%, while premium items may have over 50%. Exceptional specimens can reach 70% or more. However, too much blood isn't always better—pure cinnabar without any ground is not considered bloodstone. For finished seals, having blood on all six sides is the highest grade, known as "full house red." Four or five sides with blood are considered genuine, while three or two sides are average, and single-sided blood is the least valuable.

Third, the shape of the blood. Blood can appear in different forms: star-shaped (point blood), strip-like (vein blood), or block-like (massive blood). The value increases when the blood forms natural patterns or abstract shapes, giving the stone a more artistic and unique appearance.
